How To Plan A Shoot Abroad In 2024: 3 Tips From Odd Muse Social Team
Last-minute location shoots are what we do best muses
We love sharing the BTS for our muses on YouTube of us travelling the world from Paris to Beverly Hills, taking location shoots to a whole new level for collection launches at Odd Muse. With many of you flooding the two-man team (Sophie and Aimee) with questions as they jet off to tackle styling, shooting and serving looks, we thought today we’d give you the answers…
1) Don’t over-plan
“I’d say my biggest tip is to not heavily plan which might sound a bit mad but from Paris to New York to LA we tend to take one day at a time and see how we do. There may be days when we feel more inspired and creative and others when nothing goes to plan (including the weather). As long as you make sure you get everything you need shot by the flight or train home then it doesn’t matter how you do it.” - Sophie.
The whole team holds such an important part in prepping around the location shoots (a favourite of Odd Muse to mark each new collection in a new city across the globe) but the creative mind behind it all, is social media assistant, Sophie. (Or as our social media executive Kiera calls her, the creative queen). While the wider team focus on logistics from booking hotels to flights to how to execute and utilise the creative content across marketing channels to preparing the samples, Sophie focuses on prepping mood boards, shoot locations, props and preparing her filming and photography equipment. However, surprisingly, her biggest tip… don’t overplan.
2) A Creative Deck is a non-negotiable
It all begins in the Odd Muse HQ, taking you back to step one. While not overplanning to take away from the creative vision is key in such a fast-paced and reactive industry, the process begins with Aimee and Sophie brainstorming the initial idea of the shoot and what location will bring that to life for each collection. Then comes the creative deck featuring the must-have stops for shooting, styling preparation, a mood board and of course detailing of any social media stunts (that you all love across our TikTok. It’s all about planning the different forms of content across channels to shoot whilst hitting each location.
3) Why a tight turnaround works for Odd Muse
The power of the mood board allows everyone to envision the finished campaign and helps the entire team remain aware of the creative direction, especially as the Odd Muse way is keeping the shoot carefully close to the launch. “The real booking happens 1-2 weeks before the shoot” explains Kiera, the tight turnaround works best not only for the team but for our muses and always leads to an incredible outcome. With the campaign brief finalised the week before the trip and the launch happening the week directly after, this allows Odd Muse to do what it does best and be transparent with our muses to share sneak peeks of what’s to come and give them an insight to the trip on TikTok live and more.
“The creative deck Sophie creates acts like a bible, not just for the social media team but the wider marketing team too”- Kiera.
